A Letter To My Daughter, Elizabeth "Bettie" On Her 8th Birthday

Dear Bets,

One of the happiest days of my life was the day you were born, Monday, December 2, 2002.  So, your 8th birthday is this week Thursday and will always be important to me because it's the day I became your mother.  I certainly don't want to minimize your sister and older brothers, but your birthday is especially specially special to me since you are my youngest child.

Your birthday brought me to a place in my life where I became free to love with wild abandon, where I could run around like the liberated, adoring smitten mother that I am.   It is fun to love someone as much as I love you.  I don't care who sees me kissing you all over at Walmart or gazing adoringly at you when I tuck your pretty hair behind your ear at the grocery store...I love all of my babies and you, my sweet, were my fourth child...the youngest in the family and will always be my baby girl.

I didn't know how to love like that until December 2, 2002.

Someday, you will find out that having a little girl changes the way you look at the world.  I say this because you have taken to telling everyone what you want to be when you grow up "I want to be mommie".  Which, of course, I love...but I want you to be you!!  Which, will probably be a singer or a dancer...definitely not a scuba diver.

So, this letter is to tell you that I love having you as the center of my universe, which is much, much more fun that before we had you.  I love your little giggles, your endless kisses and hugs, and that you love me sooo much and tell me that a thousand times a day.

So, on your birthday, we shall eat ice cream for breakfast, ice cream for lunch and cake and ice cream for dinner because it's your favorite...I love you more than anything on this earth and a gazillion times more to infinity and back..!! Happy 8th Birthday
